Oak, Walnut, or Ash? Choosing the Right Timber for Your Library Ladder

The timber you choose sets the character of your ladder and how well it sits in your room. We work with three exceptional hardwoods, here's what you need to know about each one.
Oak — The Classic
Oak is the natural starting point for most clients, and for good reason. It's strong, beautiful, and has been the timber of choice for British craftspeople for centuries.
The grain is warm and characterful, and oak darkens and deepens beautifully with age. It takes oil, wax, and stain exceptionally well, giving you plenty of finishing options.
Best for: Traditional, Victorian, and period interiors. Pairs perfectly with dark painted joinery and brass hardware.

Walnut — The Statement
If oak is the classic, walnut is the showstopper. Deep chocolate tones, a fine lustrous grain, and a natural richness that makes it the most striking timber we offer.
Walnut needs very little finishing, a light oil is usually all it takes to look spectacular. It's the timber designers get excited about.
Best for: Contemporary and luxury interiors. Pairs beautifully with dark shelving, leather furniture, and brushed brass or matte black hardware.

Ash — The Contemporary
Ash is one of the most underrated timbers on the market. Pale, clean, and strong (actually harder than both oak and walnut) it brings a lightness and freshness that suits modern interiors perfectly.
It takes stain readily, so it can be pushed warmer or cooler depending on your palette. A grey-washed ash ladder is a genuinely striking thing.
Best for: Scandinavian, minimalist, and contemporary interiors. Pairs well with light painted shelving and natural textiles.

Something Else Entirely?
Oak, walnut, and ash cover most bases, but if you have a specific timber in mind, we're happy to work with any species we can responsibly and sustainably source. Just ask.
